Studies show that boys and girls are both likely to use the computer for equal amounts of time. What they won’t do, however, is use the computer for the same purposes. Boys tend to play games and spend more time on entertainment-style uses while girls are more likely to do homework, research, and send emails. No matter what the studies show, though, it is pretty safe to say that both boys and girls are just as likely to end up in some awkward situations. The best way to avoid potential issues is to set rules for when and how your children can use the computer.

Computer Placement

If you are concerned about your child’s computer use, do not allow him or her to have a personal computer in his bedroom. Make sure the computer is place in your living room or dining room – high traffic areas where you can glance at the screen while the PC is in use. If your child does have his own computer, make sure it is located in a place where you can see the screen when walking past the open bedroom door – and make sure that door is open during use.

That brings us to the issue of teens and laptops. Many schools now issue laptops to students for use and they bring them home for homework and networking. You have just as much duty (and right) to track your child’s laptop use as you do his use on your regular desktop. Make a space for the laptop to be stored and make sure it is placed there whenever it is not in use – especially at night.

Computer Time Limits

Unless your child is doing legitimate research for homework or a project, the amount of time he is on the computer, for gaming or internet use, should be strictly limited. You limit television time, so hwy not internet time as well? Make sure your children have a fair balance of time on the computer, watching television, playing outdoors, and enjoying time with family. Place a timer next to the computer so that your child understands his limits.

Change Your Internet Homepage

You’ll need a separate list of rules for internet use vs. regular computer use. One great way of reminding your children about those rules is to put up a simple web page with a list. You can then make that page your “home page” so that it is the first thing everyone sees when they bring up the browser. List reminders about not talking to strangers, social networking stipulations, not giving out personal information, and anything else you deem relevant.

Speaking of Privacy

Make sure your children and teens are limited in what they are allowed to do on social networking sites. If you allow your child to participate on sites like these, demand passwords and do what you feel is necessary in terms of privacy settings. Tell your children that they can only have accounts on social networking sites if they follow your rules. You have the right to limit the sites they use, including free email sites, blogs, and web hosting sites.

As a parent, it is your right and your responsibility to set rules for your children. They may resist at first, but what you are doing is for their own safety. Be firm and fair and your children will ultimately respect your decisions. Whenever you are in need of repair, be sure to contact your local Delaware PC technician.

Your computer isn’t running quite right. You’ve run your virus scan and you’ve received notification that you have a corrupted svchost.exe file. Upon review of the “Processes” window of your Task Manager you find that you actually have dozens of svchost.exe files running. What are they for and how will you figure out which one needs repair?

Understanding the svchost.exe File

Once upon a time, the people who created Windows decided to stop using .exe files and instead started using .dll files. The problem is that Windows can’t launch files from .dll, so they load themselves into a .exe file in order to operate. Many of your computer’s functions are doing this at the same time, each creating its own svchost.exe file to run from.

The problem is svchost.exe files are a common target for virus creators and hackers. If your computer should become infected in this manner, you’ll have to figure out which file is corrupt so that you can repair or delete it.

How to Remove the Virus

Virus removal can be complicated and requires some knowledge of your computer’s operating system. The process involves turning off your computer’s System Restore function, rebooting into Safe Mode, entering the command prompt, and typing a series of codes to remove the infected file. Even if you are familiar enough with these codes to attempt this repair, it is important to note that this virus is worm-like and may duplicate itself faster than you can remove it.

Your best bet for removing the svchost.exe file virus is to get your PC to a computer repair shop right away. Let a qualified Delaware PC technician backup your files and make the repair, searching for duplicated copies of the virus as he works. Before long, your computer will be back to normal and you’ll be headache free!

It doesn’t matter what type of problem you are having with your computer – hardware, software, or virus related. One of the best things you can do when encountering errors or issues is to start your computer in the Safe Mode. The Safe Mode, created by Windows, allows you to start your computer by running the least amount of applications, memory, and files necessary to function. From here you can usually troubleshoot problems, run virus scans, and even run a system restore, making the pc repairs you need on your own.

Entering the Safe Mode

Did your computer shut down suddenly due to an error, freezing that caused you to press the power button, or a blue screen of death? If so, when you power the computer on again you will likely receive a message telling you that the computer shut down unexpectedly. The message will give you the option of starting the computer normally or starting it in safe mode. If you know what is wrong, you may want to bypass safe mode and go about your business. If you have no idea how the problem started, you may want to go into Safe Mode and troubleshoot for more information.

Forcing a Safe Mode Start-up

If you did not experience a sudden shut-down, you may have to force your computer to start in the Safe Mode instead. To do this you will hold down the F8 key while your computer is attempting to boot up. You will then be presented with a menu that allows you to start in the Safe Mode.

Safe Mode is Not a Cure-All

Unfortunately, starting your computer in Safe Mode will not guarantee a solution to your computer problems. From the Safe Mode you should be able to run the computer correctly while you run your troubleshooting tests and repairs. If these things work, you’ll be able to start and run your computer in its normal mode again. If not, you may need to call your local Delaware PC technician for help with more advanced pc repairs.

The longer you have your computer, the more data you’re going to store on its disks. While it may be easy to take your computer’s data for granted, viruses and hardware malfunctions can erase everything you have in the blink of an eye. In order to avoid having to hire a computer repair company, you’ll want to make regular backups of your data. Here are a few reasons why.

Protecting Yourself from Theft

Computers and laptops are often targets of theft, either in the home or during transport to work, school, or some other venture. If your computer is stolen, you’ll have absolutely no way of recovering your lost data. Copying your data to an external drive – and keeping it in a separate, safe place – will ensure your data is never completely lost.

Power Surges and Electrical Damage

While most people have their computers plugged into power strips for added protection, there is no guarantee that a power surge or spike in electrical energy will not cause damage to your computer. The most common type of damage caused by electricity is the destruction of the hard drive or your computer’s motherboard. If this happens, there is very little chance of your files being recovered.

Virus Attack

While viruses affect the way your computer functions and take up tons of memory, they can also cause irreparable damage to your data files – including both your personal information and your system’s operating files. Having a backup will make your system easier to restore once the virus is removed.

Unforseen Disasters

There is no way to predict whether your home will ever be affected by a fire, flood, earthquake, or tornado. But what will happen to the important data on your PC something does happen? Having your system backup stored in a safe place will ensure you have something to start over with.

Cost Effectiveness

Let’s be honest. Backing up your computer’s data on a regular basis is a lot less expensive than attempting to pay for computer repair in Delaware. Technicians will charge you an arm and a leg for data recovery – and they’ll spend a ton of time on the process whether they can actually save your files or not.

Save yourself a ton of time and energy by making a proper backup every week or so. You’ll be glad you took a few minutes to save all of your valuable data.

Nothing is quite as awful as sitting down in front of the PC, hitting the power button, and watching nothing happen. Your stomach sinks, you worry about work and potentially lost files, and you have absolutely no idea what to do next. While you may end up needing some computer repairs, there are a few things you can do from home to try to get it to turn back on.

Check Your Power Sources

Let’s start with the obvious. Check to make sure your computer is plugged in. Check the power source at the back of your PC and the power source going into your power strip or outlet. Speaking of power strips, make sure the strip it self hasn’t been shut off. Finally, make sure your outlet isn’t connected to a light switch in the room to save power. We once forgot about this energy-saving technique and couldn’t figure out why the PC would not come on. Turns out someone had accidentally flipped the switch, cutting off all power to the outlet. Oops!

The Computer Tries to Turn On but Turns Off Again

Maybe it seems like your computer has taken on a life of its own, powering off and then shutting itself down again right away. This type of problem can be caused by a simple electrical short or by something more serious, like a hardware problem. Sometimes the parts inside your computer simply come loose over time and need to be reseated (or tightened). You may also need to check for shorts, verify that your power supply voltage is correct, or troubleshoot your computer’s beep code.

The Blue Screen of Death (BSOD)

The blue screen of death (BSOD) is everyone’s worst nightmare. Sometimes they’re caused by simple technical glitches and never come up again. Sometimes they’re a sign of a very serious problem. If your computer starts to turn on and then shows a BSOD, you may need to undo recent registry changes, start a system restore, or even run a simple virus scan from safe mode.

Does this all sound overwhelming? That’s OK. We’re not all computer geniuses and the inner workings of a computer are complicated. If in doubt, call your local Delaware PC technician for computer repairs and ask for help. His expertise will help you to avoid causing further damage!

Uh oh – you’re computer is fried. It won’t start or, when it does start, things don’t run properly at all. Some of your files have already disappeared, but others are still accessible. There is little hope of repair so the only thing left to think about at this point is how you’re going to recover all of the files that were on your hard drive before your problems started. While it isn’t always possible to recover files, there are some things you can do to minimize your losses and avoid paying for data recovery services.

Don’t Use the Computer

You already know your computer is close to death and want to avoid calling a computer repair shop in Delaware. Don’t push your luck by running it until it finally kicks the bucket. The less you use your computer, the higher your odds of getting your files safely transferred to another device. Leave the computer turned on, make a back-up of what you can save, and then talk to your computer repair specialist about having an missing files recovered.

Make Space on the PC

It is important for there to be as much space as possible on your computer so that other automatic functions don’t overwrite the files you can’t locate. After you’ve made the appropriate file backups, delete them from your hard drive. Empty your recycle bin and empty your internet cache. All of these things will make space so that none of your missing files are deleted. Do not install any new software, either. Doing so may increase your risk of losing files.

Loss Prevention

A proactive approach is usually best. If you haven’t had any problems, and your computer is still running well, you should consider installing a data recovery services program on your PC. Doing so will ensure it already exists when problems do arise later on down the line.

Data recovery services can be simple or complex. While you may be able to restore a few files on your own, you’ll likely need professional data recovery services and assistance if the problem is widespread or if your hard drive has stopped working altogether. Talk to your Delaware PC tech to determine the type of help you really need.

Spyware is pretty scary stuff, especially in terms of your personal information and identity. Spyware programs can keep track of your computer usage and steal your personal information, including login names, passwords, and even financial information. Spyware viruses come in a wide variety of forms but some are a bit more common than others. Here are just a few to look out for.

BargainBuddy

BargainBuddy is an incredibly annoying piece of code. Products distributed by the BullzEye Network tend to have BargainBuddy included. It installs a piece of code that tracks the way you use your computer and then forces pop-up advertisements to appear on your screen.

HuntBar

Huntbar is very invasive and will make it difficult for you to use the internet the way you like. This program adds a toolbar to your Internet Explorer software. Your homepage will automatically redirect to HuntBar and anytime you attempt to use a different search browser you’ll end up directed back to HuntBar. It’s invasive, bold, and takes up a ton of your computer’s memory in the process.

ISTbar

ISTbar is especially scary for those with children in the house. This spyware program poses a major threat. The program will take over your internet browser, change your homepage, and cause pornographic pop-ups to cascade all over your screen – whether you have a browser open or not. It continuously downloads files (potentially with viruses), and causes your system to slow down considerably.

Adware comes in a wide variety of designs and can do a ton of potential damage to your computer. Your best bet is to constantly run your anti-virus program on a regular basis. Active spyware removal should be done at least weekly in order to decrease your odds of becoming infected not only with the spyware but with its associated viruses as well. Contact a Delaware PC technician for any assistance.

Realistically speaking, computers are less expensive than they’ve ever been in the past. This means that while some minor repairs may seem feasible, others may leave you wondering if you should simply purchase a new computer and start from scratch. While starting over may seem convenient, it’s not necessarily the end-all-be-all.

Technology Makes Life Easier

We now have more technological devices to choose from than ever before as well. Not only do we have computers and laptops, but we now also have notebooks, iPads, iPhones, Kindles, cell phones with enhanced data plans, and more. Those who don’t actually use the computer for more than email and web surfing may find it convenient to simply replace what they have with something smaller and more convenient. Take some time to think about your current PC situation before you decide to spend money on repairs or replacements.

Business Dictates Need

Despite advances in technology, many businesses run on computers and losing function sometimes means a loss in business. In these cases it is often best to get a computer repair tech out to your premise as soon as humanly possible for a quick repair – if one is possible. Even if you can’t have your PC repaired, your technician will be able to save any information that wasn’t captured during your last backup.

Consider Your Budget

Of course, not everyone with a PC is in business. At the end of the day, the difference between a repair or replacement may be in your budget. While you may have an older, slower computer you may not have quite enough money to buy a brand new one. Sometimes making a repair and adding some RAM or hard drive space can make what you have last just a bit longer – at least long enough for you to figure out financing for a replacement.

There are pros and cons to repairing old computers and to buying replacements. Don’t forget to think about software and hardware upgrades and the potential learning curves associated with each. Talk to your technician for computer repair in Newark and get his opinion on the matter as well. He’ll do his best to make sure you always have some sort of working PC.

Avoid PC Repairs with Virus Protection

It doesn’t matter if you use the internet for a few minutes per day, or all day long. The chances of picking up a computer virus from an email or website are incredibly high. Virus removal programs are designed to help you block potential threats so that they never have a chance to cause damage to your PC, therefore avoiding future computer repair costs. Here are a few benefits associated with virus protection software.

Protection from Spam

Protection from spam is important for two reasons. A good anti-virus pram will make sure that your personal information is not picked up by those who should not have access, reducing the amount of spam you see on your screen and in your inbox. The program will also ensure that hackers are unable to access your accounts, sending spam under your name. This ensures you aren’t blamed for problems you did not actually cause.

Protection from Malware and Spyware

Malware and spyware are scary words to those who have never heard them before. Malware is defined as a malicious software program designed with the intent to destroy files on your computer. Spyware is considered a type of malware, but is often used to gather data about your computer use – including passwords, the sites you visit, and other personal details. Your anti-virus program will quickly and easily pick up on these types of threats, removing them from your PC before they can cause any damage.

Protection from Viruses

There are, of course, other types of viruses – codes written to force your computer to stop working properly, to not shut down properly, and to do other strange things. Installing anti-virus software will ensure you are safe from all types of threats.

Most anti-virus programs update themselves regularly, ensuring you are protected from even the newest of threats. Install an anti-virus program the moment you take your PC out of the box. Doing so will ensure you don’t have to spend any money on PC repair in Newark – at least not for repairs caused by viruses!
